Organizing for America
arnold --
President Obama gathered with congressional leaders of both parties yesterday for an open, honest, and productive discussion on health reform. It was a strong success, focused on substance -- as CNN put it, "a win for our country."
While disagreements remain, the meeting uncovered considerable areas of overlap, including many Republican ideas that were already in the President's proposal. And with all the best ideas now on the table, the President made it clear that no excuses remain: Congress must put aside partisan divides and swiftly complete a final bill.
This is a message the whole country needs to hear, but most people weren't able to watch all seven hours of today's summit -- and we can't let the special interest spin machine drown us out. That's where you come in.
Check out a few of the best moments from yesterday's historic event. Then, help spread the word using our brand new "On the Air" tool to speak out on talk radio.
Watch highlights from the bipartisan meeting
The President was crystal clear about his commitment to pass reform that puts Americans in charge of their own health care, reduces costs, and expands coverage for tens of millions without insurance. We've come too far to scrap a year's worth of work and start over. And the millions of Americans that are suffering can't afford another year-long debate. There's simply too much at stake.
Yesterday's bipartisan meeting was a huge step forward toward passing reform. And today, you can help make sure we go the rest of the way:

Tune in tomorrow ... Wed, February 24, 2010 11:10:34 AM From: "Mitch Stewart, BarackObama.com"
Tomorrow, the President will be hosting leaders from both parties at a bipartisan meeting about how to reform our broken health insurance system. It's a critical step toward getting the job done on health reform -- and a historic moment you won't want to miss.
Senators and representatives will gather with the President to talk through the bills that have already passed the House and Senate, as well as the proposal President Obama released on Monday. And they'll have an open discussion about any new ideas from either side of the aisle for how to solve this crisis.
OFA will live-stream the meeting starting at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. We'll provide live updates and feature video of key moments during and after the event.
Will you join us for this pivotal moment? Sign up and RSVP to get a reminder before the meeting starts, and then check in throughout the day tomorrow to see this historic conversation unfold.
During tomorrow's meeting, the President will moderate a discussion on four critical goals:
-- Protecting Americans from insurance company abuses;
-- Reining in the cost of care;
-- Putting affordable, high-quality coverage within reach of every American; and
-- Reducing our unsustainable national deficit.
Tomorrow, the bottom line is simple: This issue is more important than any partisan divide. It's time to put all real solutions on the table, and it's time to move forward.
And this is your chance to be there when the long sprint toward health reform enters its final phase.
Please sign up for a reminder before the meeting starts, and then tune in for as much as you can starting at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time:

Dear Arnold,
Your senators have the chance to help secure America's financial future.
Tell them we need reform that protects people from reckless behavior.
Call your senators now, by dialing 1-800-335-6946.
I've been hearing from my colleagues on Capitol Hill that a key Senate committee could be voting as early as this week on strong financial reforms.
And I've also heard that lobbyists are working around the clock to stop real reforms – allowing some of the same reckless behavior that led us into the current crisis to continue.
That's why we need to flood our senators' offices with calls of support, urging them to pass strong financial reform that protects Americans who play by the rules.
Here's how you can help:
Dial 1-800-335-6946 now and follow the steps below to urge your U.S. senators to vote for reform.
1. After you've dialed 1-800-335-6946, follow the prompts to enter your zip code. Then press "1" to connect to your first senator's office.
2. Tell the staff person who answers the phone where you are calling from and that you strongly urge the senator to vote for strong financial reform.
3. You can choose to end your call there, but if you'd like, you can also mention that those who caused the financial crisis should be held accountable for their recklessness and that Americans who play by the rules should be protected.
4. We need each and every senator to stand up for financial reform, so please call 1-800-335-6946 a second time. Once again enter your zip code, then press "2" to be connected with your second senator.
5. After you're done, click here to let us know you called. This step is important for us to be able to measure the impact we're having, so please don't skip it!
This is a critical moment for the future of our country. It's our chance to ensure that those who caused the financial crisis are accountable for the damage they've caused, to protect consumers and small businesses, and to promote long-term economic growth.
Please call your senators and urge them to support real financial reform.
Thank you for your help on this urgent matter.
Sincerely,
Barry Jackson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acLW1vFO-2Q Fwd: Details of the President's plan ... Tue, February 23, 2010 9:59:43 AM From: "Mitch Stewart, BarackObama.com"
President Obama has released a new health reform proposal -- and our political director just sent me an overview that I wanted to share with you.
Here's the bottom line: It's a plan that puts Americans in charge of their own health care, bridges the gap between the Senate and House bills, and adds additional ideas from both parties to fight waste and abuse.
The plan will serve as a starting point for discussion at a major bipartisan meeting this Thursday between the President and congressional leaders to discuss Republican and Democratic ideas for improving our health care system. And if there are more areas of agreement, they'll be added to the plan.
Ultimately, we're going to move forward with a bill that lowers costs, increases competition, provides relief for families and small businesses, and covers the uninsured -- and we'll need your help to do it.
Please take a look at the details of the proposal so that you'll have all the info you'll need for the fight ahead, and send them on to anyone else you know who is fighting for reform.
Thanks,
Mitch

Mitch --
FYI, here's a quick overview from the White House of the President's just-released proposal on health reform. Exciting stuff.
It builds on legislation passed by the House and Senate, bridging the differences in those bills while adding new provisions.
The most notable addition is the creation of a new "Health Insurance Rate Authority," which would give the federal government the power to review unreasonable rate increases and other unfair practices by the big insurance companies.
The policy experts I speak to think this is a really strong improvement -- and would help a lot of people in places where insurers are jacking up rates like they are in California, Maine, and around the country.

Overview of the President's Proposal The President's Proposal puts American families and small business owners in control of their own health care.
-- It makes insurance more affordable by providing the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history, reducing premium costs for tens of millions of families and small business owners who are priced out of coverage today. This helps over 31 million Americans afford health care who do not get it today -- and makes coverage more affordable for many more.
-- It sets up a new competitive health insurance market giving tens of millions of Americans the exact same insurance choices that members of Congress will have.
-- It brings greater accountability to health care by laying out commonsense rules of the road to keep premiums down and prevent insurance industry abuses and denial of care.
-- It will end discrimination against Americans with pre-existing conditions.
-- It puts our budget and economy on a more stable path by reducing the deficit by $100 billion over the next ten years -- and about $1 trillion over the second decade -- by cutting government overspending and reining in waste, fraud and abuse.
It includes a targeted set of changes to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Senate-passed health insurance reform bill. Key changes include:
-- Closing the Medicare prescription drug "donut hole" coverage gap;
-- Strengthening the Senate bill's provisions that make insurance affordable for individuals and families;
-- Strengthening the provisions to fight fraud, waste, and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid;
-- Increasing the threshold for the excise tax on the most expensive health plans from $23,000 for a family plan to $27,500 and starting it in 2018 for all plans;
-- Improving insurance protections for consumers and creating a new Health Insurance Rate Authority to provide federal assistance and oversight to states in conducting reviews of unreasonable rate increases and other unfair practices of insurance plans.
