Congress is expected to cast its final votes on historic Wall Street reform as soon as today.

So much has happened in the past year that it's easy to forget how much OFA supporters have done to get to this point.

In key districts around the country, we organized to win a 223-202 vote in the House last December. OFA supporters poured in nearly tens of thousands of calls to Capitol Hill offices the day before last month's vote to get it through the Senate.

This is your bill -- the strongest and boldest overhaul of the financial system since the aftermath of the Great Depression. It's the change we fought the big banks to make -- and we've almost won.

What happens before these final votes will determine if this once-in-a-generation legislation makes it to the President's desk. That's up to us. We need to make sure the champions in Congress who've worked with the President to pass this bill know we're supporting them -- and that those in opposition hear our call for reform.

Tell your representatives you strongly support Wall Street reform -- and that they'll have your thanks if they do the same.

Reform will increase security for all Americans by forcing credit card, mortgage companies, and predatory lenders to play by the rules instead of exploiting consumers with hidden fees and pages of fine print.

It establishes a new, independent agency -- the Consumer Financial Protection Agency -- whose sole job is to protect consumers. And it ensures American taxpayers will never again be asked to bail out the big banks that are "too big to fail."

But these changes will only happen if the President can sign it into law. We all need to get the bill to him.

Write a letter to your members of Congress now:

Thanks,

Yohannes

Yohannes

Sea Turtles in
the Frying Pan

Oiled sea turtles like just this one may have been burned alive last week during attempts to contain the current Gulf oil disaster.

Send an email. Tell U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and officials in the Obama administration that you oppose their 5-year offshore leasing plan that would encourage even MORE dangerous drilling off our coasts.

Dear Arnold,

It’s a horrifying story: Last week, a Gulf ship captain reported seeing sea turtles burned alive in an attempt to keep oil off the Gulf coast. [2]

BP – the company responsible for the Deepwater Horizon blowout and subsequent Gulf oil disaster – was trying to contain and prevent the oil from reaching coastal beaches and marshes by burning it at sea.

Sadly, no one told the sea turtles – and it now appears that the lives of some threatened and endangered sea turtles (already hurt by the oil) may have been lost. Areas of oiled ocean are now being surveyed for sea turtles before burning, but that is only a stopgap measure.

Help prevent the next drilling disaster. Tell the Obama administration that you oppose their 5-year offshore leasing proposal – a proposal that would encourage more dangerous drilling off the coasts of Florida, Alaska, North Carolina and other Gulf and Atlantic coastal states.

The deadline for public comments is tomorrow (June 30th), so please take action right now.

So far, at least 429 threatened and endangered sea turtles have been confirmed dead since oil first began spewing into the Gulf of Mexico from the BP Deepwater Horizon blowout. . However, many more sea turtles have likely been lost from the oil spill but not found… and many more would certainly die when baby turtles begin to hatch in the coming weeks. That is why agencies are collecting the eggs from the nests they know of for transfer to Atlantic Florida beaches that are free from oil.

Sea turtles will die from ingesting too much oil. And like us, they can drown. Sea turtles need to surface to breathe, which is hard to do when the ocean’s surface is coated with toxic oil.

The survival of sea turtles is precarious, and the human-caused loss of even one turtle is too much. We need to act now to help protect the beaches of North Carolina (another important nesting ground for sea turtles) and other states where dolphins, whales and birds rely on healthy coastal ecosystems to survive.

Send your message now, and let the Obama administration know that you oppose dangerous new offshore drilling.

But preventing new offshore drilling isn’t just about protecting threatened and endangered sea turtles. As the Gulf oil disaster clearly demonstrates, entire economies are at risk. Clean-up workers can become sick. And an entire marine and coastal wildlife system is at risk of being lost to Big Oil’s hubris.

To send a loud, clear message to the Obama administration, we need just 800 more people from Texas to take action before tomorrow, so please send your message right away, and then forward this message and/or share this action on Facebook and Twitter.

For the Wild Ones,

Jamie Rappaport Clark
Executive Vice President
Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. As a former head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a career biologist and a mother, I can’t stress enough how important it is that we prevent more dangerous drilling off our coasts and that you send your message today.

Organizing for America
Arnold --

After more than seven months of work and a prolonged effort by Organizing for America supporters, House and Senate leaders just agreed on a final Wall Street reform bill. They're moving fast toward final votes.

This is the final hurdle to enacting the toughest financial reforms since the Great Depression -- and delivering another historic accomplishment for the American people -- so we're going all-in in the next few days to make sure it passes.

Many in Congress are fighting hard alongside President Obama for Wall Street reform -- they need to hear our support. Others are standing with the special interests -- and it's even more important that they hear from us too.

To start, we need to reach our representatives somewhere we know they'll be looking -- the letters page of their local newspapers.

Write a letter to the editor today -- and show Congress that Americans want Wall Street reform.

Write a letter to the editor

Using our letter-to-the-editor tool is easy -- and it's one of the only surefire ways to get a message through directly to your senators and representatives. For some, it's the first thing they read every morning.

We need Congress -- and all Americans -- to know that reform doesn't just help create a more stable economy, it would actually improve the lives of everyday American families. Here are five benefits we want to make sure everyone knows:

1) Reform forces credit card and mortgage companies to play by the rules. No more hidden fees or pages of fine print.

2) Families who are hoping to buy a home or pay for college are put on a level playing field with lenders. Reform ensures they'll get the information they need presented clearly and concisely so they can make good decisions. The same goes for small businesses and community banks that play fair and deserve to see their businesses grow.

3) The legislation cracks down on predatory lenders looking to mislead people into taking on irresponsible debt.

4) Wall Street reform establishes an independent agency -- the Consumer Financial Protection Agency -- with one job: to protect consumers and enforce the new consumer financial protections, which would be the strongest ever enacted.

5) Finally, American taxpayers will never again be asked to bail out the big banks that are "too big to fail." Let's be absolutely clear about this, no matter what our opponents in Congress say.

Passing Wall Street reform -- on the heels of the Recovery Act and health reform -- would be historic, and it will help improve the lives of everyday Americans. It will show once again that this movement can go toe-to-toe with lobbyists -- and win. You've been instrumental in keeping this bill from being watered down by special interests.

Now we need to cross the finish line -- take a few minutes to write a letter to your local paper today:

Dear Arnold,

The vote is tomorrow – tell your representative to stand up for you, not special interests.

Tell Rep. Hensarling to vote YES on strong financial reform.

As soon as tomorrow, the House could vote to pass a strong financial reform bill – a huge victory that would protect consumers from financial abuse.

This bipartisan legislation would make sure consumers know what they're buying, and if scammed, where to go for help. But some members of Congress are still on the fence.

Social Security cuts?!
...
From:
"Barry Jackson, AARP"
...

To: texas_long_horn2005@yahoo.com

Dear Arnold,

Social Security didn't cause the deficit – benefits shouldn't be cut to fix it.

Send a message to Congress and the president: don't cut Social Security to fix the deficit.

For 75 years, seniors have been able to count on Social Security benefits, even in the toughest times. That's why I'm so concerned about the deficit commission's meeting next week.

The commission has been charged with balancing the nation's budget – and, under pressure to find cuts in federal spending, Social Security is a prime target.

Social Security didn't cause the deficit – these benefits shouldn't be cut to fix it.

Click here to sign our petition telling Congress and President Obama: don't cut Social Security to fix the deficit.

Over the next few months, the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility will continue meeting to develop recommendations on how to cut the federal deficit, and the risk to Social Security couldn't be higher.

Many members of the commission support cuts to Social Security benefits, including co-chair Alan Simpson, an outspoken critic of the program.

After a lifetime of hard work contributing to Social Security, you, your family and your friends deserve every cent you've earned.

I know you care about America's financial security – and so do we. But our leaders in Washington should crack down on earmarks and wasteful government spending – not Social Security.

Don't let your retirement benefits be put at risk. Click here to tell Congress and the president to strengthen Social Security – not cut it.

Thank you for joining us in this fight. Together we can keep Social Security strong for today's seniors, and generations to come.

Sincerely,

Barry Jackson

Seriously? MORE dangerous offshore drilling...

Save Sea Turtles - Defenders of Wildlife

Take Action to Stop More Drilling Disasters

Oiled Pelican (Photo: Schyler / Defenders of Wildlife)

The Obama administration has proposed a 5-year plan for offshore oil and gas drilling that would open up huge swaths of our coasts to dangerous drilling – risking the lives of countless sea turtles, endangered whales, sea birds, polar bears and other wildlife.

Take action! Tell Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and the Obama administration that you oppose dangerous new offshore drilling off our coasts.

Save Marine and Coastal Wildlife

Gulf of Mexico Oil Diaster - Oiled Wildlife: *The numbers above reflect only wildlife that has been recovered dead; actual numbers of dead wildlife are likely to be much higher.

Help us send 60,000 messages by Wednesday's deadline for public comments. Take action now and forward this message to at least 3 friends.

Forward this message

Dear Arnold,

At a time when millions of gallons of oil are still spewing into the Gulf of Mexico, wreaking havoc on sea turtles, brown pelicans, sperm whales and irreplaceable coastal and marine ecosystems, it seems inconceivable that the Obama administration would consider more dirty, dangerous offshore drilling.

Yet, incredibly, that’s exactly what’s happening.

Take a stand for imperiled sea turtles and other marine wildlife. Urge the Obama administration to reject calls for offshore drilling off the coasts of Florida, Alaska, Virginia, North Carolina and other coastal states.

As of yesterday, more than 1,000 birds, 400 sea turtles and 40 marine mammals are already confirmed dead due to the Gulf oil disaster. Far more birds, sea turtles, whales, dolphins and other wildlife are likely dead or dying as a result of the ongoing oil leak in the Gulf.

The scale of this ecological catastrophe is massive. Yet drilling proponents persist in their calls to industrialize our coasts and sacrifice our marine wildlife at the altar of Big Oil’s profit margins.

The Obama administration had announced a six-month moratorium on new deepwater drilling, temporarily blocked planned drilling in the fragile Chukchi Sea and deployed thousands of federal workers to respond to the disaster in Gulf.

On Tuesday, however, a federal judge in Houston – with a history of significant financial investment in oil companies drilling the Gulf -- overturned the six-month ban on deepwater offshore drilling. The Obama administration plans to appeal the ruling and take administrative action to uphold the ban.

Ironically, the administration itself is also considering a 5-year leasing plan for offshore drilling that would approve new oil and gas drilling along the Mid-Atlantic and South-Atlantic coasts, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, and in the Arctic Ocean – risking the lives of countless sea turtles, endangered whales, sea birds, polar bears and other wildlife.

Speak out for our coastal wildlife and communities. Send your comments to the Obama Administration now.

In the face of the tragedy in the Gulf, we must make our voices heard. All comments are due by Wednesday (June 30th), so please take action now, forward this message and help us reach our 60,000-message goal.

With Gratitude,
Richard Charter, California Team Member at Defenders of Wildlife

Deepwater Horizon Fire (Photo: Coast Guard) This week, Defenders of Wildlife’s legal team moved to stop Big Oil’s attempt to block a temporary moratorium on deepwater offshore drilling, opposing the oil industry in federal court in Houston. Incredibly, a judge who has had significant financial ties to the oil industry ruled to lift the ban. However, the Obama administration plans to appeal the decision – a move supported by Defenders.
Loggerhead Sea Turtle (NOAA) So far, Defenders has mobilized more than 61,000 caring people like you in support of additional protections for loggerhead sea turtles. Loggerheads – already in trouble before the Gulf oil disaster – are particularly vulnerable to oil and can drown or be poisoned when they become oiled.

Defenders has also mobilized to prevent threatened and endangered sea turtles from being burned to death as part of the controlled oil burns occurring in the desperate attempt to reduce oil from the ongoing Deepwater Horizon oil leak in the Gulf.
Polar Bears (copyright Norbert Rosing, NGS) Last week, more than 31,000 Defenders supporters urged Senate Democrats to pass comprehensive legislation to reduce America’s dependence on fossil fuels and address the impacts of climate change without opening additional coastal areas to offshore drilling.

Fri, June 25, 2010 1:20:18 PMBill White and Linda Chavez Thompson...From:"Luke Hayes, TX.BarackObama.com" ...View ContactTo:Arnold schwertman Organizing for America Arnold --

In 2008, we saw record-breaking activism and mobilization from Texans ready for new leadership. With the help of volunteers like you, we were able to change America. In 2010, the need to change our leadership in Texas is just as urgent, and I'm asking for your help.

Bill White and Linda Chavez Thompson are running for Governor and Lt. Governor of Texas. Together, they will work every day for a better future for all Texans -- but they can't work to move our state forward without your help.

Will you sign up to volunteer today?

The choice is clear: Democrat Bill White, who will improve public schools, ensure that Texans have the skills and training needed to compete for good jobs, and lead the charge towards a cleaner energy future. Or Republican Rick Perry, who talks about secession and coyote escapades and will continue to move Texas in the wrong direction.

If you're as serious as we are about moving Texas forward, from education to energy to bringing new jobs and new technology to the Lone Star state, you know how important this decision is.

Will you join the fight?
