Arnold --
Anyone who cares about the environment and what we pay at the pump needs to hear this news.
The details get a little complicated -- I had to study up to write this thing -- but bear with me, because this is important.
This week, the President unveiled the next round of a program to make America's cars more efficient -- the most important step our country's taken to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, cut pollution, and bring down costs for drivers.
Getting it done meant bringing together stakeholders -- from auto workers and union representatives to manufacturers and environmental leaders -- to offer their two cents and agree upon a program and set of standards. In light of what's happening on Capitol Hill as I write this, it's a welcome reminder of what can happen when folks put aside their differences and work together to do big things for our country.
This announcement follows up on an aggressive plan that the administration put in place back in 2009, setting ambitious fuel-efficiency and greenhouse-gas standards for 2012-2016 model cars and trucks. That plan alone is estimated to save 1.8 billion barrels of oil -- and save families up to $3,000 at the pump -- over these vehicles' lifetimes. And this new program, covering model years 2017-2025, takes real, tangible steps to raise the bar even higher, nearly doubling the current fuel efficiency of the average car.
This is a big deal. Everyone from truck drivers to farmers to teachers to business owners feel the burden of transportation costs -- and will feel the effects of these improvements.
Because you're someone who has let us know that you're particularly interested in clean energy and environmental issues, we wanted to make sure you heard about this news. We've pulled the information you need about this plan into a graphic you can share with your friends and family.
Check it out, and spread the word.
Here's what this program will mean in the short term: We'll start seeing more electric and hybrid vehicles from manufacturers and more clean-diesel, efficient SUVs and sedans. Automakers will have new incentives to make smart, innovative cars and trucks -- from the materials they choose down to the design of their engines and transmissions. They'll be turning to start-up companies in the clean-energy sector and in advanced battery manufacturing, helping to create jobs across the country.
And in the long term, the results of this program are huge. Here are a couple numbers to show how it will break down:
-- By model year 2025, the average American car or truck will get 54.5 miles a gallon (the average car currently gets 23.8 mpg).
-- We'll have saved 12 billion barrels of oil and eliminated 6 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution.
-- A family that purchases a new car in 2025 will save $8,200 in fuel costs, compared with what they'd pay for gas for a similar vehicle bought in 2010.
-- All told, American drivers will save nearly $2 trillion over the life of the program.
Take a look at the infographic we've put together to learn more about what the President's announcement means for all of us:
http://my.barackobama.com/Fuel-Efficiency
This is something every American needs to hear about, so you should spread the word.

Americans Want Shared Sacrifice
As House and Senate leaders fine-tuned rival deficit reduction plans, Congress is on a path to do exactly what the American people don’t want, Sen. Bernie Sanders said in a Senate speech on Wednesday. The American people have consistently stated, in poll after poll, that they want the wealthy and large corporations to pay their fair share of taxes and they want to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. In a recent Washington Post poll, 72 percent said Americans earning more than $250,000 a year should pay more in taxes. Congress is on track to give them the exact opposite: major cuts in the most important programs that the middle class needs and wants, and no sacrifice from the wealthy and the powerful.
In a radio interview with Ed Schultz, Bernie bluntly described rival Senate and House debt ceiling proposals as “very bad” and “much worse.”

The Bernie Buzz - News From the US Senate
July 25, 2011
A Pivotal Moment in American History
With one week to go before an Aug. 2 deadline for raising the nation's debt limit, the stakes are enormous. Some in Congress continue to press for steep cuts in programs for working families. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid remain in jeopardy. Funds for education, child care, nutrition, affordable housing, environmental protection and energy independence also are at stake. When Republican leaders talk about $3 trillion or $4 trillion in spending cuts over the next 10 years, with no new taxes on the wealthy and large corporations, please understand what they mean.
Watch Bernie on CNN»
SOCIAL SECURITY — The average Social Security recipient who retires at age 65 would get $560 less a year at age 75, under a proposal to change the formula which determines cost-of-living adjustments. The same retiree would get $1,000 less a year at age 85 than under current law. Another provision pushed by House Republicans would require that Social Security always be solvent for 75 years, an avenue to even larger cuts in benefits. All of this would take place despite the fact that Social Security has not contributed one penny to the deficit and has a $2.6 trillion surplus.
MEDICARE — Raising the eligibility age from 65 to 67 is one proposal. Another would cut benefits by as much as $500 billion over 10 years. How are 66-year-old Americans with modest means going to afford health insurance with a private company especially if they have medical problems? It's not going to happen. They are going to suffer. Some will unnecessarily die.
MEDICAID — At a time when 50 million Americans already have no health insurance, Republicans and some Democrats are proposing to cut hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid. That means that many men, women and children will lose the health insurance they have. According to a Harvard University study, some 45,000 Americans die each year because they don't get to a doctor when they should. How many more will die if Medicaid is slashed? How many children will be thrown off the Children's Health Insurance Program?
EDUCATION — Childcare and college education already are unaffordable for millions of working families. Head Start has long waiting-lists. If Republicans and some Democrats get their way, Pell grants and other educational programs will be deeply slashed. Affordable childcare and a college education will no longer be possible for many families in our country.
ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY — Forget about the government having the ability to protect the people from corporations who want to evade Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act regulations. With massive cuts in the EPA, the resources will not be there. Forget about this country having the investment capability to transform our energy system to energy efficiency and sustainable energy. Forget about creating millions of jobs rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure and improving our public transportation system.
We don't have to make these cuts. Adopting a fair budget plan which ends tax breaks for the wealthy and large corporations and makes real cuts in military spending is the kind of shared sacrifice that the American people want -- and that Bernie has been fighting for.

Arnold --
I'm the national training director at Obama for America. My job is to develop the programs and resources our staff and volunteers use to teach others how to grow this campaign in their communities.
I'm writing because you or someone you know might want to be among a group of people who will play the leading role in our grassroots strategy this fall. They're called our fall fellows.
By now you've probably heard of our summer organizers program, through which more than 1,500 full-time volunteer organizers have stepped up as the next generation of leaders in this movement. These folks have been the focus and the heart of our movement all summer, and though each and every one of them will remain a part of this organization, their time as Summer Organizers ends next month.
The job of fall fellows is to pick their work up and carry it forward into the months to come.
Our fall fellows are going to engage new volunteers on front porches and over the phones. They'll register new voters and develop relationships with other organizers and supporters on campuses and in communities. The people selected will be on the front lines of the most important work we do as a campaign: bringing people together at the local level.
Apply to be a fall fellow right now -- or pass this message along to someone else you think would be great:
http://my.barackobama.com/Fall-Fellows
Organizing is tough work. I started out as an organizing intern in Iowa in 2007, and I can tell you firsthand that the hours can be long, often extending late into the evening and over the weekend. But this will be one of the most rewarding and inspiring things you'll ever do. It's through organizing that I've met some of my closest friends and learned the skills I use in my job every day.
So even if you're not in a position to join us part- or full-time in the months to come, I really hope you'll forward this message to someone you know who might be.
This kind of organizing isn't just how we plan to win this election. It's a reflection of the kind of politics that we believe in -- the kind the President himself practiced as a young organizer working with communities devastated by factory closings in Chicago.
No experience is required -- you might be a veteran organizer or a first-time volunteer. And if you happen to be a college student, you can work with your school to earn credit through this program.
Bottom line: No matter how old you are or where you come from, it's not too often you get a chance to do something like this.
Apply now to be one of our fall fellows -- or share this message with someone you think might be interested:
http://my.barackobama.com/Fall-Fellows
Thanks, and good luck,
Sara

GilrUp | Uniting Girls to Change the World
Dear Arnold,
Wow! More than 16,500 of us signed the Girl Up petition to the Obama Administration asking for continued leadership in the fight to end child marriage. Thank you so much for your support on this important issue which affects one is seven girls in developing countries. Working together, we can change build a better future for girls around the world. Girl Up at the White House
On Monday, I was privileged to be one of seven Girl Up Teen Advisors, who delivered your signatures to the White House, showing that girls across the United States are united in the fight against child marriage. Seven of us took part in the meeting as a symbol of the one in seven girls in developing countries who are married by the age of 15.
Our signatures represent the Girl Up community’s concern and compassion for girls across the world -- as well as our anger over the injustice and human rights violation that is forced marriage. In addition to our signatures, we also delivered a letter asking for a follow-up meeting to discuss the issue further with members of President Obama’s administration. We want to discuss and work with them to support girls and to find ways to work with leaders in other countries to prevent child marriage.
We know that our leaders in Washington are busy working on many critical issues. That’s why it’s more important than ever that we continue to remind them the urgency of preventing child marriage -- and show them how many people care about it. Our sisters across the world are counting on us.
Check out photos from our petition delivery.
Thanks again for joining with us to unite girls to change the world.

Arnold,
Tonight, all of the real Democrats in the Wisconsin recall primaries defeated the fake Democrats who Republicans threw up against them. Even though primaries in Wisconsin are open to members of all parties and even though Republicans worked to turn out their tea party base, all of the real Democrats won anyway. In fact, all but one of them had over 65% of the vote.
We successfully slapped down one Republican dirty trick, but there will be more before the recalls are done. Please, make sure we keep winning by contributing $1 to each of the nine Democratic recall candidates.
Now, it's on to the general elections. There will be one on July 19, six on August 9, and two on August 16.
Republicans ran the fake candidates to draw out the recall elections. They believe that over a longer election season, their unlimited corporate attack ads will wear us down. They are also using the extra time to hastily pass new redistricting maps.
Republicans think they can take away workers' rights and then use dirty tricks to thwart democracy. It's up to us to prove them wrong. Please, contribute $1 to each of the nine Democratic recall candidates.
Keep fighting,
Chris Bowers

GilrUp | Uniting Girls to Change the World
Hi Arnold,
CM_blockI'm excited to let you know that you are helping make a difference in the fight against child marriage! Since we launched the child marriage petition in April, more than 10,000 members of the Girl Up community have taken a stand to combat this harmful practice that affects thousands of girls in developing countries every day. Your incredible support shows just how powerful we can be when we unite for girls around the world. But we need your help to get more signatures!
Next week, I'm headed to the White House with some of my fellow teen advisors to deliver these signatures to Karen Richardson in the White House Office of Public Engagement. We only have five days left before the big delivery. In order to show Washington how serious we are, we want to get to 15,000 signatures. Will you sign the petition and share it on your social networks? It only takes a second, and it can make a world of difference in a girl's life:
http://girlup.org/stopchildmarriage http://spn.tw/t1fIpk this is my sponcer
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently called for an end to child marriage worldwide. She was quoted in Glamour magazine calling for greater involvement by people like you:
"We are working every day to turn the tide. But we cannot do it alone. We are reaching out to women and girls, fathers and brothers, religious leaders and all who can help us to convince societies that this particular tradition is better left behind."
So let's start by getting our own communities — our friends, teachers, and parents — to join us in taking a stand against child marriage. 1 in 7 girls in developing countries is married before she is 15. We need to let our leaders in Washington know that when the time comes, the Girl Up community is willing and ready to take action! We only need about 5,000 more signatures to get to our goal of 15,000 — will you sign and ask your friends to do the same?
http://girlup.org/stopchildmarriage
I joined Girl Up because I know how powerful girls can be when they're given the tools and the inspiration to become leaders in their communities. With your help, I know we can help the United Nations make a difference for millions of girls around the world.
Thanks,
Bridget Duru, Girl Up Teen Advisor

Dear Arnold,
Thanks to friends like you, last month we raised more than $253,203.91 online from 5,211 donations!
I’m amazed by what we’ve accomplished together in the last year. Our online community has raised $3,881,898.87, helping provide more than 27 million meals to hungry men, women and children. We’ve been able to do all that while ensuring that 96% of your donation dollars go directly to helping those in need.
Those numbers are great, but you can really see the impact when you meet the people we’re helping. Today I wanted to make sure you saw the story of Danielle, who lives in Las Vegas with her mother, Lillie, and son, Alex.
Watch Danielle’s story to see the impact you’re having on the lives of Americans.
Danielle works nights, from 8:15 PM to 7:00 AM, to help provide for her family. But in these difficult economic times, the money only goes so far. She relies on her local food pantry to get healthy meals for her family.
With the end to these difficult times still not in sight, we know we must work harder than ever in the coming year. It’s the only way we’re going to meet the needs of hungry families.
Help us start off the new fiscal year right. Please make a donation right now.
THANK YOU!

National Buz Banner UPDATE
Dear Friend:
Thank you very much for signing my letter to President Obama. You are making a real difference.
Incredibly, in less than a week, more than 80,000 Americans have signed that letter. Like you, they do not believe that deficit reduction should be placed on the backs of working families, the elderly, the children, the sick and the poor – as the Republicans propose. They believe that deficit reduction should be about shared sacrifice and that the wealthiest people and largest corporations must also do their part in reducing our debt.
Next week, I intend to present this letter to the White House. I would very much like to see us have at least 100,000 names. Could you help? Could you reach out to friends and family and encourage them to sign our letter?
Let’s make the president understand that if he stands tall, and does not yield to right-wing extremists, there will be a lot of people behind him.
Sincerely,
Add your signature to Bernie's letter. Nearly 100,000 people already have. »

Dear Arnold,
The deadline to raise the debt ceiling is just over a month away, and things are not looking good.
Republicans recently broke off talks with Vice President Biden over the White House's proposal to raise $400 billion in revenue by eliminating tax breaks for wealthy individuals and corporations.
That proposal represented no more than one dollar in revenue increases for every five dollars in cuts, but even that was a bridge too far for Republicans.
And let's remember, while the Republicans won't even agree to a minimal amount of tax increases, they are willing (in fact eager) to put extremely popular and important programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security on the chopping block.
These negotiations are a farce and it's time for President Obama to cut bait and stop trying to negotiate with Republican extremists.

As bad as the state of current negotiations is, the final deal might be even worse. The Hill, a trade publication that covers Capitol Hill, reported that members of Congress in both parties think President Obama will once again cave to the Republicans' demands. 1
And why not? Time and again, Republicans have taken the needs of all Americans hostage to the narrow ideological demands of the Tea Party base. And President Obama has repeatedly responded to this strategy first by preemptively compromising and then caving even more when Republicans move the goalposts and demand further concessions.
We saw this during the Bush tax cut fight in December of last year and the negotiations over the continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown earlier this year.
But what makes this dynamic so maddening and ridiculous when it comes to raising the debt ceiling is that defaulting on our debt, which is the scenario that is driving the negotiations, would seriously hurt the Republicans' Wall Street benefactors.
So if you cut through the kabuki, it's clear that in this case at least the Republicans are exceedingly unlikely to go through with their threats and allow our government to default on our debt.
President Obama needs to stand up the Republicans and call their bluff, because that is what it is.

There's one final point that merits mentioning. The Bush tax cuts for the wealthy are some of the biggest drivers of the large federal deficit, yet the Republicans went to the mat to extend them in December. And they then used the subsequent increase in the deficit caused by the tax cuts they championed as a reason to call for cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
We'll all be better off when they are allowed to expire. But until then, we should stop treating the Republicans as good-faith actors when they're engaging in deficit hysteria. And that is only further underlined by their unwillingness to raise any taxes while pushing cuts to vital programs.

P.S. Occasionally when we send out an action that encourages President Obama to take a strong negotiating position, some of our members think it amounts to an attack on the president. But Paul Krugman captures the stakes of this fight and correctly understands it as a watershed moment. Referencing the Republicans' unwillingness to accept tax increases of any sort, he writes, "What this says to me is that Obama cannot, must not, concede here. If he does, he's signaling that the GOP can extract even the most outrageous demands; he's setting himself up for endless blackmail. A line has to be drawn somewhere; it should have been drawn last fall; but to concede now would effectively mean the end of the presidency."2 We agree.
