Dick Cheney confirms he is a war criminal
Thom plus logo

Draft dodger Dick Cheney has a new book coming out. The man with no pulse is trying to set the record straight about his time in the White House as Vice President - and according to excerpts from the book entitled, "My Time" - which is set to be released next week - Cheney confirms what we all suspected - that he really is that evil. Cheney goes after former Secretary of State Colin Powell for opposing the Iraq War - then rips into Condoleezza Rice - calling her "naïve" for trying to negotiate with the North Koreans.

I guess Cheney would have preferred just bombing them. Cheney, who got five deferments from serving in Vietnam, even admits that back in 2007 - he urged President Bush to launch military strikes against a Syrian nuclear site. Luckily - no one else in the White House agreed with Cheney. Cheney then goes on to praise the use of torture - confirming that he is not only a war criminal - but also a proud war criminal. As for Cheney's thoughts on Bush - he praised him as a "strong and resolute" leader. Go figure.

I say as soon as the book hit shelves next Tuesday - it should immediately be entered into evidence in the war crimes trial against the Bush administration.

Contract for the American dream
We are Rebuilding the American Dream

We're sharing and rating our best ideas for actions people can take to turn the Contract for the American Dream into a reality. Click here to join in:
JOIN

Dear friend,
Over the past month more than a quarter million people have endorsed the Contract for the American Dream. That's a big deal. Progressives are uniting behind a set of real solutions for fixing our broken economy.

We're coming together because the Contract was built by our movement from the ground up. More than 70 outstanding organizations got involved and helped to make it happen. Hundreds of thousands of people took part in crafting the ten-point plan. It's our plan.

But the Contract isn't just an inspiring document. It's a plan to transform our country and it's up to all of us to make it happen. So today we want to open up the door once again and ask for your best ideas for putting the Contract to work.

What are your best ideas for actions people can take to help turn this Contract into a reality?

Submit your best ideas here, and rate ideas from others.

We know that this isn't the way organizations usually run campaigns. But we believe in the brilliance of the American Dream movement more than in any one organization.

It could be that one plank speaks to you and you have a great idea for how to work on it locally. You might want to engage with elected or community leaders to get more people excited about the Contract as a whole. You might have a creative idea about how to use art, music, or video to spread the word.

Over the coming weeks we'll make sure we share the best ideas across our movement and provide the resources and tools so that people just like you can go from inspiration to action as quickly and easily as possible.

Our goal is to see Contract for the American Dream campaigns popping up nationwide in a matter of weeks. From efforts to raise awareness about the Contract itself, to local campaigns on individual Contract planks, to endorsements from community leaders and organizations.

The sky's the limit right now. The more ideas we come up with, the more people who jump in and start spreading the word, the better.

Click here to submit and rate ideas.

Thank you for being a part of, and believing in, this movement.

–Van Jones and the rest of the Rebuild the Dream team

P.S. For a refresher, the Contract for the American Dream consists of a simple but powerful ten-point plan:

I. Invest in America's Infrastructure
II. Create 21st Century Energy Jobs
III. Invest in Public Education
IV. Offer Medicare for All
V. Make Work Pay
VI. Secure Social Security
VII. Return to Fairer Tax Rates
VIII. End the Wars and Invest at Home
IX. Tax Wall Street Speculation
X. Strengthen Democracy

Arnold --

Rick Perry has spent a lot of the last two weeks in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina continuing to boast about a so-called "Texas miracle."

Middle-class families in Texas know that's actually a tall tale. In fact, a study published just last week reports that a quarter of Texas kids live in homes with parents who don't know where their next meal will come from -- the worst rate in the country.

When we asked supporters to share their thoughts on Governor Perry last week, hundreds of people stood up to help tell the full story -- will you join them?

Tell us what you think Americans need to know about what Rick Perry has done, or failed to do, as governor over the last 11 years.

Your feedback will help hold him accountable on the campaign trail, inspire fellow Texans to get involved, and introduce his record -- his actual record -- to voters across the country. Your words will remind him that even as he runs, he won't be able to hide -- a lesson he apparently hadn't learned as recently as last week. That's when his campaign explained that the positions he took in the book he wrote just nine months ago, like saying that Social Security is unconstitutional and "a crumbling monument to the failure of the New Deal," no longer represent his views.

But what other Americans are just starting to learn about -- and, frankly, reject -- Texans have dealt with for more than a decade. It's up to us to make sure he doesn't get to run away from the truth.

Weigh in and let us know what you'd most like to see Gov. Perry held accountable for:

Thanks, and stay tuned.

Dear Arnold,

"Essentially game over" for the climate.

That's what climate scientist James Hansen calls the proposed Keystone XL pipeline — which would carry oil out of Canada's vast tar sands oil fields to Texas, where it will be refined, then burned across the globe, dealing a catastrophic blow to our chance of returning earth to a stable climate.

This project requires a presidential permit to start building — and it is President Obama's decision alone to grant or deny that permit. He will make the decision as soon as September.

Tell President Obama: Stop the Keystone XL pipeline. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

The Alberta tar sands are a carbon bomb. The 3rd largest oil field in the world, the difficult extraction and transportation of the tar sands oil ultimately produces up to three times the carbon emissions of traditional oil. (And extreme environmental devastation along the way.)1

The Keystone XL pipeline is the fuse to this bomb — a highway to swift consumption of this dirty, dangerous crude. As if that wasn't enough, it poses a massive spill risk in the six states along the pipeline route, including over the Ogallala Aquifer which provides up to 30% of our nation's agricultural water.

We. Must. Stop. This.

Tell President Obama: Stop the Keystone XL pipeline. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

Twenty leading climate scientists have just sent a letter to President Obama urging him to deny the permit.

And from August 20th to September 3rd, there will be a massive, historic, daily sit-in outside the White House where more than 1500 people, including CREDO staff, have already signed up to risk arrest in peaceful protest. (For more about the sit-in, see below.)

The administration's previous decisions on climate do not inspire confidence that they will deny the permit. Just last week, the administration approved offshore oil drilling in the Arctic. They have opened vast new areas to coal mining, and late last year, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton even said that she was "inclined" to approve Keystone XL.

But President Obama still has the final word. He does not have to negotiate with Congress or industry. As his State Department reviews the permit, the decision — which could have a devastating impact on the livability of our nation, and our world — is entirely in his hands.

We've lost too many climate fights already. We need a massive, historic show of pressure to make sure we don't lose this one. Please sign the petition and read below for other ways to get involved.

Tell President Obama: Stop the Keystone XL pipeline. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

Thank you for fighting for an oil-free future.

Elijah Zarlin, Campaign Manager
CREDO Action from Working Assets

1. "Keystone XL Pipeline," Friends of the Earth

Because this fight is so important, leading climate activists including Bill McKibben, Naomi Klein and climate scientist James Hansen are organizing a historic, daily series of peaceful protests between August 20th and Sept. 3rd. The CEOs and Directors of nearly 30 leading Environmental Organizations, including CREDO's Michael Kieschnick and Laura Scher, are urging people to participate.

More than 1500 people from across the country, including CREDO staff, have already signed up to join the sit-in outside the White House and risk arrest.

Please read the invitation letter below for more information. If you would like to sign up to join the protest, and possibly be arrested, click here to sign up.

Dear Friends,

This will be a slightly longer letter than common for the internet age — it's serious stuff.

The short version is we want you to consider doing something hard: coming to Washington in the hottest and stickiest weeks of the summer and engaging in civil disobedience that will quite possibly get you arrested.

The full version goes like this:

As you know, the planet is steadily warming: 2010 was the warmest year on record, and we've seen the resulting chaos in almost every corner of the earth.

And as you also know, our democracy is increasingly controlled by special interests interested only in their short-term profit.

These two trends collide this summer in Washington, where the State Department and the White House have to decide whether to grant a certificate of 'national interest' to some of the biggest fossil fuel players on earth. These corporations want to build the so-called 'Keystone XL Pipeline' from Canada's tar sands to Texas refineries.

To call this project a horror is serious understatement. The tar sands have wrecked huge parts of Alberta, disrupting ways of life in indigenous communities — First Nations communities in Canada, and tribes along the pipeline route in the U.S. have demanded the destruction cease. The pipeline crosses crucial areas like the Ogallala Aquifer where a spill would be disastrous — and though the pipeline companies insist they are using 'state of the art' technologies that should leak only once every 7 years, the precursor pipeline and its pumping stations have leaked a dozen times in the past year. These local impacts alone would be cause enough to block such a plan. But the Keystone Pipeline would also be a fifteen hundred mile fuse to the biggest carbon bomb on the continent, a way to make it easier and faster to trigger the final overheating of our planet, the one place to which we are all indigenous.

As the climatologist Jim Hansen (one of the signatories to this letter) explained, if we have any chance of getting back to a stable climate "the principal requirement is that coal emissions must be phased out by 2030 and unconventional fossil fuels, such as tar sands, must be left in the ground." In other words, he added, "if the tar sands are thrown into the mix it is essentially game over." The Keystone pipeline is an essential part of the game. "Unless we get increased market access, like with Keystone XL, we're going to be stuck," said Ralph Glass, an economist and vice-president at AJM Petroleum Consultants in Calgary, told a Canadian newspaper last week.

Given all that, you'd suspect that there's no way the Obama administration would ever permit this pipeline. But in the last few months the administration has signed pieces of paper opening much of Alaska to oil drilling, and permitting coal-mining on federal land in Wyoming that will produce as much CO2 as 300 powerplants operating at full bore.

And Secretary of State Clinton has already said she's 'inclined' to recommend the pipeline go forward. Partly it's because of the political commotion over high gas prices, though more tar sands oil would do nothing to change that picture. But it's also because of intense pressure from industry. The US Chamber of Commerce — a bigger funder of political campaigns than the RNC and DNC combined — has demanded that the administration "move quickly to approve the Keystone XL pipeline," which is not so surprising — they've also told the U.S. EPA that if the planet warms that will be okay because humans can 'adapt their physiology' to cope. The Koch Brothers, needless to say, are also backing the plan, and may reap huge profits from it.

So we're pretty sure that without serious pressure the Keystone Pipeline will get its permit from Washington. A wonderful coalition of environmental groups has built a strong campaign across the continent — from Cree and Dene indigenous leaders to Nebraska farmers, they've spoken out strongly against the destruction of their land. We need to join them, and to say even if our own homes won't be crossed by this pipeline, our joint home — the earth — will be wrecked by the carbon that pours down it.

And we need to say something else, too: it's time to stop letting corporate power make the most important decisions our planet faces. We don't have the money to compete with those corporations, but we do have our bodies, and beginning in mid August many of us will use them. We will, each day, march on the White House, risking arrest with our trespass. We will do it in dignified fashion, demonstrating that in this case we are the conservatives, and that our foes — who would change the composition of the atmosphere are dangerous radicals. Come dressed as if for a business meeting — this is, in fact, serious business.

And another sartorial tip — if you wore an Obama button during the 2008 campaign, why not wear it again? We very much still want to believe in the promise of that young Senator who told us that with his election the 'rise of the oceans would begin to slow and the planet start to heal.' We don't understand what combination of bureaucratic obstinacy and insider dealing has derailed those efforts, but we remember his request that his supporters continue on after the election to pressure his government for change. We'll do what we can.

And one more thing: we don't just want college kids to be the participants in this fight. They've led the way so far on climate change — 10,000 came to DC for the Powershift gathering earlier this spring. They've marched this month in West Virginia to protest mountaintop removal; a young man named Tim DeChristopher faces sentencing this summer in Utah for his creative protest.

Now it's time for people who've spent their lives pouring carbon into the atmosphere to step up too, just as many of us did in earlier battles for civil rights or for peace. Most of us signing this letter are veterans of this work, and we think it's past time for elders to behave like elders. One thing we don't want is a smash up: if you can't control your passions, this action is not for you.

This won't be a one-shot day of action. We plan for it to continue for several weeks, till the administration understands we won't go away. Not all of us can actually get arrested — half the signatories to this letter live in Canada, and might well find our entry into the U.S. barred. But we will be making plans for sympathy demonstrations outside Canadian consulates in the U.S., and U.S. consulates in Canada — the decision-makers need to know they're being watched.

Twenty years of patiently explaining the climate crisis to our leaders hasn't worked. Maybe moral witness will help. You have to start somewhere, and we choose here and now.

If you think you might want to be a part of this action, we need you to sign up here.

As plans solidify in the next few weeks we'll be in touch with you to arrange nonviolence training; our colleagues at a variety of environmental and democracy campaigns will be coordinating the actual arrangements.

We know we're asking a lot. You should think long and hard on it, and pray if you're the praying type. But to us, it's as much privilege as burden to get to join this fight in the most serious possible way. We hope you'll join us.

Take back the American dream
We are Rebuilding the American Dream

Our movement is growing, and we're gathering October 3-5 in Washington, D.C. for the Take Back the American Dream conference. Will you join us?
JOIN

Dear American Dreamer,
I have an invitation for you. I want you come to Washington, D.C. with me October 3-5, 2011, for an event I couldn't be more excited to announce: the first-ever national gathering of the American Dream movement.

Maybe you haven't yet heard, but something big is happening in America. Beneath the corporate media's radar screen, it is growing faster and buzzing more than anything we've seen in recent memory.

We call it the American Dream movement. That's an apt term for the hundreds of thousands of good people who are fighting everywhere to rebuild the American Dream.

This year, we've watched this people-powered phenomenon grow out of the courage and inspiration from Wisconsin and spread across the country. From massive protests in the state legislature in Ohio to 45,000 Verizon workers on strike today, people nationwide are standing up.

This summer, hundreds of thousands more of us came together in person and online to craft our plan for fixing our broken economy. We created a comprehensive jobs agenda: "Contract for the American Dream." It has already been endorsed by 270,000 thousand people.

Now it's time for us to gather in person, to learn from each other, get inspired, and show everyone that we will not back down. On October 3-5 we're going to do all that and more at the Take Back the American Dream conference hosted by our friends at the Campaign for America's Future.

National Buz Banner UPDATE

No. 1 Challenge America Faces
is a Jobs Crisis

Bernie speaks to United Steelworkers

Sen. Bernie Sanders spoke to more than 3,000 enthusiastic union leaders from across North America in Las Vegas on Wednesday at the convention of the United Steelworkers of America. Bernie focused on the need to create millions of good-paying jobs and to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Earlier in the week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi addressed the convention. President Barack Obama spoke to the membership via video.

At a time when more than 16 percent of American workers -- 25 million Americans -- are either unemployed or underemployed, Bernie called for a bold effort to create millions of jobs by rebuilding the nation's crumbling infrastructure, transforming our energy system and rewriting our trade policy so that American products -- not jobs -- are our number one export.

“These are tough times in our country and a pivotal moment in our history. It’s important for us not just to be on the defensive. We have got to be on the offensive,” Bernie said in his speech. “We have got to bring forth a vision that speaks to what America is all about. And that is jobs that pay people a decent wage, jobs that are created in the United States of America, not in China.”

Hours after delivering his convention speech, Bernie spoke with Ed Schultz on MSNBC about the jobs crisis facing the country.

“I think the American people are beginning to catch on,” Bernie said. “The president cannot keep trying to compromise with people who do not want to compromise. What he needs to do is come out with a bold job-creating program to put millions of people back to work, and challenge the Republicans to support it.”

Action in Washington, DC: Stop the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.
This spill-prone pipeline would run through Texas.
Stop the Pipeline!

Dear Arnold,

This isn't an everyday request. I'd like you to consider doing something really big: joining me and nearly 2,000 people, and risking arrest to stop President Obama from making a really big mistake.

The President must decide before the end of the year if he will approve or deny the Keystone XL pipeline.

It would ship environmentally catastrophic Canadian tar sands oil through Texas to the Gulf of Mexico; posing a massive spill risk along the way, and speeding the rapid consumption of this oil across the globe, essentially spelling "game over" for our hope of returning earth to a stable climate.1

It's up to President Obama.

The President just granted approval for offshore oil drilling in the Arctic and recently opened vast new areas to coal mining. And Secretary of State Hillary Clinton previously said she was "inclined" to approve this pipeline. But now it's up to President Obama to defuse the largest carbon bomb on the continent.

To raise massive pressure on the President, there will be a historic daily sit-in in front of the White House every day from August 20th to September 3rd.

Nearly 2,000 people — over 100 a day — have already signed up for a day to risk arrest in peaceful protest. I'll be there. And so will other CREDO staffers and CREDO Action members, many of us who are traveling across the country to take a stand. Can you be there for one of the days, too?

Sign up to join the sit in at the White House between August 20th to September 3rd.

This action is being organized by leading climate activists including Bill McKibben, Naomi Klein and climate scientist James Hansen. The CEOs and directors of nearly 30 leading environmental organizations, including CREDO's Michael Kieschnick and Laura Scher, are urging people to participate.2

While arrests are a potential outcome from this action — being arrested is not the goal: Our intent is to send a message that these issues are so urgent and serious that we will escalate our pressure and commitment to make sure that the Keystone XL Pipeline is not approved. If that involves risking arrest, we are prepared and willing to take that risk and deal with the consequences. We believe that the risks of inaction are far greater than the risks of taking action.

Sit-ins and civil disobedience were at the heart of the civil rights movement, and helped end South African apartheid.

Today, in this summer of record-breaking extreme weather, corporate polluters have more power than ever to block sustainable energy sources and keep us locked in our destructive dependence on fossil fuels. Oil refining giants like the Koch brothers want to build this pipeline to build their fortune, shipping the tar sands oil from Texas to be burned across the globe.

But President Obama does not have to negotiate with them, or the global warming deniers in congress who do their bidding.

It is President Obama's decision alone — but it's up to us to make sure that he feels so much pressure that he can't possibly approve this pipeline to disaster.

Please read the invitation from the organizers below this message and join me, other CREDO staff, CREDO Action members and nearly 2000 Americans in taking a stand against dirty oil, to powerfully urge our president to do the same.

Sign up to join the sit in at the White House between August 20th to September 3rd.

Thank you for fighting for an oil-free future.

As if that wasn't enough, it poses a massive spill risk along the pipeline's route through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas, which passes over the Ogallala Aquifer which provides up to 30% of our nation's agricultural water.

We. Must. Stop.

Thank you for fighting for an oil-free future.

More than 1500 people from across the country, including CREDO staff, have already signed up to join the sit-in outside the White House and risk arrest.

Dear Arnold,

Right now is the harvest season for fresh fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, green beans, apples and peaches. These fresh, nutritious foods are vital to the health of the men, women and children we serve.

We have offers of these foods from farmers and corporate partners across the country. But we must move quickly before these fresh foods expire.

Thanks to a $250,000 matching grant from Kraft Foods Foundation, we have an easy way for people to help.

Take The Quiz

We've created a 10 question quiz about fresh fruits and vegetables. For every question you get right, Kraft Foods Foundation will donate $1 to Feeding America. Each dollar helps ship 10 pounds of fruits and vegetables to feed hungry families.

Take the quiz now & help ship these fresh foods to families across the country.

Every question you get right helps pay for the shipping & transportation costs that get the food from farm to table.

Thank you,

Vicki Escarra

Dear Arnold,

With food supplies nearly depleted, the situation in Ethiopia is dire. Officials report that reserve supplies of food are nearly gone, and lack of clean drinking water is exacerbating the situation.

On August 3, 2011, the United Nations declared a famine in three more regions of southern Somalia. Famine conditions will likely spread to more areas and could last until December. Ambassador Don Steinberg, USAID Deputy Administrator, has said that 300 children under 5 years old die each day in Somalia from malnutrition.

Inspired by the strong initial response to our urgent appeal, IRD's emergency relief team is focusing on saving the lives of at-risk Somali and Ethiopian children.

Richard Wagner, Senior Program Development Officer - Relief, is in eastern Ethiopia working to provide water, sanitation, hygiene, and supplemental feedings. We are targeting children 5 years old and younger and other highly vulnerable groups.

Please donate to IRD's drought response today. If you are interested in learning how you can become involved in raising awareness or funds in your community, please contact us at Advancement@ird-dc.org.

Dear Arnold:

Anna Katherine isn't old enough to stay out past 9 p.m. She might have trouble remembering the combination to her locker at school.

Yet this 12-year-old has to test her blood sugar five times each day … and keep track of her numbers every hour she is awake. (Her family takes over the testing vigil each night while Anna Katherine sleeps.)

Will Anna Katherine's life with diabetes — and life for millions like her — always be the 24-hour-a-day struggle it is now?

Not if researchers supported by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) can help it. And not if ADA can count on your support with a gift today.

Anna Katherine and her family (and the world) were watching when ADA recently gathered the nation's most prestigious diabetes researchers to share what's working in diabetes research, what's not, and why.

Here are just a few of the highlights of the promising research these top scientists reported:

An early version of the "artificial pancreas," a device that would dose insulin automatically, helped prevent hypoglycemia overnight in children. Low blood glucose during the night is an especially big concern for people with Type 1 diabetes.
Therapies are in development that could one day sustain or even restore the production of insulin in people recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
New, long-acting drugs are being developed that will reduce the need for frequent dosing in patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, such as once-weekly exenatide, ultra-long-acting insulin and implantable drug delivery systems.
A novel method of treatment has been developed to not only prevent and treat vision loss due to diabetic macular edema, but also to actually restore vision in some people.

Like millions of others living with diabetes, Anna Katherine and her family are counting on research breakthroughs to help shape a brighter future for her.

Her father says, "We are anxious to follow the developments that will make life better for Anna Katherine and everyone else with diabetes. We're hoping that one day we'll hear the news that this meeting has announced a cure!"

You can help us keep moving steadily forward toward that day, with your gift to the American Diabetes Association today.

Join the MillionsSM who are working to Stop Diabetes®, from Anna Katherine on her front porch … to scientists in the laboratory … to advocates in Congress and in communities nationwide. Make a gift to the American Diabetes Association today.

Sincerely,
Larry Hausner
