Rick Perry presided over the execution of an innocent man. The media needs to ask him about it.
Tell the media: In the next debate, confront Rick Perry about presiding over the execution of an innocent man.

Dear Arnold,

As Governor of Texas, Rick Perry oversaw the execution of an innocent man. But the media is failing to do its job and make Perry account for his role in this terrible injustice.

The facts are pretty damning. Cameron Todd Willingham was executed for intentionally starting a fire that killed his three children.1 But all six of the outside experts who have reviewed the evidence of the Dec. 23, 1991 fire that killed the Willingham children have concluded that there is no reason to think arson caused the fire.2

In other words, Mr. Willingham was executed for a crime that never even occurred.

And yet, in the Republican debates thus far, Rick Perry has gotten a free pass about it.

Tell the media: Confront Rick Perry about presiding over the execution of an innocent man in the next debate. Click here to sign the petition.

It's bad enough that Rick Perry ignored evidence of Mr. Willingham's innocence and allowed him to be executed. But then he tried to cover it up. Right before the Texas Forensic Science Commission was set to review a report discrediting evidence against Willingham (who had already been executed), Perry effectively blocked their investigation by removing some of the members of the commission.

Despite a presidential debate in which the audience erupted with wild applause when Perry touted the 234 men and women who have been executed during his time in office, the media has yet to question him about his involvement in this tragic miscarriage of justice.

No moderator has pointedly asked Perry about his decision not to stay the execution of Willingham in the face of evidence proving he was wrongly convicted. Nor has anyone asked Perry about his subsequent efforts to stonewall further investigation of this case.

The media has a responsibility to the electorate and to the general public to confront Perry about his decision. No one who is seeking the Presidency of the United States should be able to get away with overseeing the killing of an innocent man without being questioned about it.

Tell the media: Confront Rick Perry about presiding over the execution of an innocent man in the next debate. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

This is an issue that has especially strong relevance right now. Today, Governor Perry will oversee the execution of the 235th person to receive the death penalty since he took office as the Governor of Texas. 3

You would think that making so many decisions of that magnitude would weigh heavily on anyone. However, in a Republican debate last week, Perry gave the chilling response that he's "never struggled" with the decision to authorize any executions. 4

This is an especially troubling statement for the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for President given that there is scientific evidence proving the innocence of one of the men who was put to death on Perry's watch.

The day of the authorization of his 235th execution is the perfect time to demand that the moderators of future Republican debates directly question Perry about Todd Willingham's case to educate the public about Perry's alarming track record on executions in his state.

Tell the media: Confront Rick Perry about presiding over the execution of an innocent man in the next debate. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

Thank you for speaking out to hold Rick Perry accountable.

Dear friend,
The first national gathering of the American Dream Movement is coming up in less than a month. We sure hope you can be there.

Thousands of leaders, local volunteers, students, teachers, unions, community groups, and progressives from across the country will gather in Washington, D.C., for the Take Back the American Dream Conference.

On October 3-5, we'll learn from each other, get inspired, and show everyone that we will not back down as we fight to rebuild the middle class and take back our country.

We know that not everyone has the cash on hand right now to get to the conference. So Rebuild the Dream (the organization I help to lead) is teaming up with our friends at Democracy for America to do something about it. We are offering scholarships to 30 amazing activists who might not otherwise be able to attend the conference.

Want to go? Click here to apply for a scholarship right now.

Applying for a scholarship is easy, just three steps. This conference is a place for you to to share your ideas. Then we want you to bring what you learn home to help inspire others.

We need to make sure we get passionate activists from every corner of our movement and from as many walks of life as possible to help make the conference as powerful as it can be.

Sign the Petition!

Dear MoveOn member,

You deserve equal time.

After the President's State of the Union address in January, CNN not only gave time for the official Republican response, but also put Michelle Bachmann on the air with the "Tea Party Response" to the speech. Now the President is preparing to give a major jobs speech on Thursday, and we need to ensure that the response comes from more than one side of the political spectrum.

The American Dream Movement includes scores of groups representing millions of regular Americans who've been out in force for months demanding jobs, not cuts, an end to attacks on the middle class, and fair taxes on corporations and the rich. In July, when we got together to write the Contract for the American Dream, we had twice as many gatherings as the tea party had when they launched.

Immediately following the president's speech, we will broadcast an official American Dream Movement response from some of the grassroots leaders who've been championing the fight for jobs. But getting air time is key to changing the discussion around jobs. So we need to send a message to CNN.

"CNN: Give the American Dream Movement air time to respond to President Obama's jobs speech on Thursday, just like you did for the tea party."

This isn't just about fairness. Responses and commentary on major presidential speeches set the tone for the debate in Congress and around the country. When the response comes only from the right, the president's position gets cast as the left pole of the debate, even when it's already a compromise position, or worse, one made primarily of right-wing ideas.

No group of Americans has fought harder for immediate, common sense measures to create jobs. As a movement, we have an important perspective to share on this debate. So send CNN this message.

"CNN: Give the American Dream Movement air time to respond to President Obama's jobs speech on Thursday, just like you did for the tea party."

The American Dream Movement was sparked by the brave teachers and students of Wisconsin, who took over their state Capitol to protest the attacks on the middle class. And it's gathering steam:

In July, over 130,000 Americans came together to create the Contract for the American Dream, a shared blueprint for an economy that works for all Americans, not just the rich.
During the debt ceiling fight, with 36 hours' notice, members of the American Dream movement organized actions at over 1,000 congressional offices to protest Republican hostage-taking and Democratic capitulation.
In August, American Dreamers swarmed town halls to ask members of Congress about jobs, and organized hundreds of actions targeting those who tried to avoid facing the public.

We're just getting started.

Thanks for asking CNN to make sure all of our voices are part of the debate on Thursday!

Thanks for all you do.

Dear MoveOn member,

I have some tremendously upsetting news: Late Friday, President Obama overruled EPA science and blocked crucial new protections against smog pollution that have been years in the making.1

The decision came after a major campaign by corporate polluters and Republicans to kill the rules.2 The result, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, is likely to be tens of thousands of premature deaths, as well as increased illness among seniors, kids with asthma, and people who have lung problems.3

Worse, in announcing his decision, President Obama repeated discredited tea party talking points about environmental rules costing jobs. The reality is that these standards were the best thing for the economy and the environment. And clean air protections are the perfect issue to remind Americans that enforcing rules to protect citizens' health and safety is one of the most important roles for our government.

With congressional Republicans planning a series of votes starting this week to block other health and environmental standards, we need to set the record straight, right away.4

Will you write a letter to the editor of your local paper reminding folks that environmental protections like these smog rules protect our health AND strengthen our economy?

Our website will give you some tips and make it easy for you to submit the letter to a newspaper near you. And your letter will help persuade folks in your community that we shouldn't be tearing our government down—we should be making it work.

President Obama tried to bury this news by announcing it hours before Labor Day weekend. But on Labor Day we need him standing up for the kinds of health and safety protections that working folks and labor unions have spent decades fighting for, not repeating Republican talking points about how we don't need them.

What's more, Nobel-Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman pointed out that this anti-smog rule would actually create clean energy jobs: "It would have forced firms to spend on upgrading or replacing equipment, helping to boost demand. Yes, it would have cost money—but that's the point!"5

Help push back against tea party Republicans' message that we can't afford to protect our health and safety.

Write a letter to the editor today.

Thank you.

Dear friend,

We are a creative and inspired movement, and here's the evidence.

Last week we asked you to submit and rate ideas for actions people can take to help turn the Contract for the American Dream into a reality. Here are just a few of the top-rated suggestions so far:

"Create a 50 state plan... for finding Contract for the American Dream candidates for local, state and federal positions."—Tim R. from Georgia

"Similar to Obama's fellows program, develop a fellowship program to train people to educate their communities on the Contract and push this agenda."—J.A.M. from Tennessee

"Develop lists of scientists, celebrities and entertainers, economists and religious leaders who support the Contract." Earon D. from Illinois

This is a great start, but the more ideas we come up with and the more people start spreading the word, the stronger our movement will be.

We need your help to come up with even more ways to take action. What do you think people can do with the Contract? Submit and rate your best ideas here.

Dear friend,
Over the past month more than a quarter million people have endorsed the Contract for the American Dream. That's a big deal. Progressives are uniting behind a set of real solutions for fixing our broken economy.

We're coming together because the Contract was built by our movement from the ground up. More than 70 outstanding organizations got involved and helped to make it happen. Hundreds of thousands of people took part in crafting the ten-point plan. It's our plan.

But the Contract isn't just an inspiring document. It's a plan to transform our country and it's up to all of us to make it happen. So today we want to open up the door once again and ask for your best ideas for putting the Contract to work.

What are your best ideas for actions people can take to help turn this Contract into a reality?

Submit your best ideas here, and rate ideas from others.

We know that this isn't the way organizations usually run campaigns. But we believe in the brilliance of the American Dream movement more than in any one organization.

It could be that one plank speaks to you and you have a great idea for how to work on it locally. You might want to engage with elected or community leaders to get more people excited about the Contract as a whole. You might have a creative idea about how to use art, music, or video to spread the word.

Over the coming weeks we'll make sure we share the best ideas across our movement and provide the resources and tools so that people just like you can go from inspiration to action as quickly and easily as possible.

Our goal is to see Contract for the American Dream campaigns popping up nationwide in a matter of weeks. From efforts to raise awareness about the Contract itself, to local campaigns on individual Contract planks, to endorsements from community leaders and organizations.

The sky's the limit right now. The more ideas we come up with and the more people who jump in and start spreading the word, the better.

Click here to submit and rate ideas.

Thank you for being a part of, and believing in, this movement.

–Van Jones and the rest of the Rebuild the Dream team

P.S. For a refresher, the Contract for the American Dream consists of a simple but powerful ten-point plan:

I. Invest in America's Infrastructure
II. Create 21st Century Energy Jobs
III. Invest in Public Education
IV. Offer Medicare for All
V. Make Work Pay
VI. Secure Social Security
VII. Return to Fairer Tax Rates
VIII. End the Wars and Invest at Home
IX. Tax Wall Street Speculation
X. Strengthen Democracy

"No more sweetheart deals for Wall Street. Let states investigate and prosecute the crimes that crashed our economy."

Sign the Petition!

Dear MoveOn member,

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is pushing a settlement with the big banks and Wall Street firms that caused the mortgage crisis—letting them get away with a slap on the wrist.1

Wall Street bankers have not faced any serious punishment for the widespread fraud that crashed our whole economy—pushing bad loans, lying to investors, forging foreclosure documents—and banks are making profits again while homeowners continue to suffer.2

Unbelievably, Geithner wants state attorneys general to agree to a sweetheart deal where these banks would pay only $20 billion—a fraction of what they could owe if fully prosecuted—and would get immunity from investigation and prosecution of the criminal greed, negligence, and fraud that caused this crisis. This would eliminate any leverage regulators have to pressure banks to help out the homeowners they've hurt.3

This settlement is only possible because it's flying under the radar. So we're joining with Rebuild the Dream to send a strong message. If we can shame Geithner and the Obama administration with a massive public petition, we can stop Wall Street from getting a get-out-of-jail-free card.

Tell Treasury Secretary Geithner, "No more sweetheart deals for Wall Street. Let states investigate and prosecute the crimes that crashed our economy."

By pushing bad loans and peddling risky mortgage-backed securities as safe investments, these banks cost the world economy $7.7 trillion. Their widespread fraud and corruption also cost millions of hardworking Americans their jobs, their homes, and their shot at the American Dream. And instead of making them pay the price for their actions, we handed Wall Street nearly $2 trillion in loans to get back on their feet, while every day Americans are still struggling to make ends meet.4

Thankfully, some state attorneys general are standing up to Geithner and Wall Street. They refuse to settle with the banks until a full and real investigation exposes the role these banks and their executives played in the crash of our housing market and economy.

Eric Schneiderman and Beau Biden, the attorneys general of New York and Delaware, are holding strong despite enormous pressure from the administration to accept the deal. Schneiderman's insistence that these crimes be investigated and prosecuted has now gotten him kicked off the settlement committee.5

Owning a home is part of the American Dream, and justice for homeowners is part of the American Dream movement. We have to stand behind Schneiderman, Biden, and other state attorneys general, and not let Geithner and a yes-man settlement committee brush banks' criminal behavior under the rug.

Tell Treasury Secretary Geithner, "No more sweetheart deals for Wall Street. Let states investigate and prosecute the crimes that crashed our economy."

Thanks for all you do.
