Right now is the harvest season for fresh fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, green beans, apples and peaches. These fresh, nutritious foods are vital to the health of the men, women and children we serve.
We have offers of these foods from farmers and corporate partners across the country. But we must move quickly before these fresh foods expire.
Thanks to a $250,000 matching grant from Kraft Foods Foundation, we have an easy way for people to help.

Dear Arnold,
With food supplies nearly depleted, the situation in Ethiopia is dire. Officials report that reserve supplies of food are nearly gone, and lack of clean drinking water is exacerbating the situation.
On August 3, 2011, the United Nations declared a famine in three more regions of southern Somalia. Famine conditions will likely spread to more areas and could last until December. Ambassador Don Steinberg, USAID Deputy Administrator, has said that 300 children under 5 years old die each day in Somalia from malnutrition.
Inspired by the strong initial response to our urgent appeal, IRD's emergency relief team is focusing on saving the lives of at-risk Somali and Ethiopian children.
Richard Wagner, Senior Program Development Officer - Relief, is in eastern Ethiopia working to provide water, sanitation, hygiene, and supplemental feedings. We are targeting children 5 years old and younger and other highly vulnerable groups.

An early version of the "artificial pancreas," a device that would dose insulin automatically, helped prevent hypoglycemia overnight in children. Low blood glucose during the night is an especially big concern for people with Type 1 diabetes.
Therapies are in development that could one day sustain or even restore the production of insulin in people recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
New, long-acting drugs are being developed that will reduce the need for frequent dosing in patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, such as once-weekly exenatide, ultra-long-acting insulin and implantable drug delivery systems.
A novel method of treatment has been developed to not only prevent and treat vision loss due to diabetic macular edema, but also to actually restore vision in some people.
Like millions of others living with diabetes, Anna Katherine and her family are counting on research breakthroughs to help shape a brighter future for her.
