A Reminder

Today is the day after the passage of a monumental health care reform bill. Yet not unlike earlier attempts at other kinds of massive reform, the contentious debate involving that legislation would seem hardly over. As a matter of fact, we appear destined to continue hearing more almost endless counter-posing thoughts and ideas on the subject; some of them maybe valid; some of them maybe not.

Yet I think in looking beyond the legislation itself there are the actions of our elected officials which may be the most troubling. The predictable political fight over the specifics of health care reform and even the need for health care reform itself both promised and ultimately delivered vociferous highly vocal arguments as well as often fruitless discussions and frustrating impasse. And all of these would appear to show few signs of abating during the coming months or even in the coming years.

Knowing all of this, then, take a look at what the President had to say to the Senate and the House of Representatives concerning their duties and obligations:

…Permit me to bring to your remembrance the magnitude of your task. Without an unprejudiced coolness the welfare of the Government may be hazarded; without harmony as far as consists with freedom of sentiment its dignity may be lost. But as the legislative proceedings of the United States will never, I trust, be reproached for the want of temper or of candor, so shall not the public happiness languish from the want of my strenuous and warmest cooperation…

If you happen to believe that Barack ObamaBarack Obama sounded particularly eloquent in his words and in his even-tempered approach or if you’re thinking that you must have somehow missed the media coverage of the President’s speech, that’s because this speech never really made the sound bites on CNN, FOX, MSNBC or any of the media networks. In fact, even radio and the print media failed to carry the President’s timely words of advice.

But there was good reason for this apparent oversight and for the lack of wide-spread media coverage, for these were the words spoken by GeorgeGeorge Washington during his fifth annual address to the Congress in Philadelphia, on December 3, 1793.

Maybe it is time our current President repeated the wise words of one of his worthy predecessors; reminding this 111th Congress of their responsibilities to the electorate and to the American experiment in democracy. After all, it appears that some who now serve us may have forgotten some important details concering civility and decorum with the passage of almost 217 years.

Thanks for sharing. We elected both the House and Senate. When they have completed their work it would be anti-American to contest it, in my view. It's America, love it or leave it.

Not only the right is put off by the manipulative ways of the Obama administration but so are many who support Obama on the left. Health reform cannot wait

By: anonymous1031 send a private message

Amra -- The millions of Americans suffering in a health care system that costs too much, and denies too many care, cannot afford another year-long debate. President Obama made that clear at yesterday's bipartisan meeting on reform: While he is listening to good ideas from both sides of the aisle and hopes to move forward in a bipartisan ...

Reconciliation: okay for Republicans, tyranny for Democrats

By: DelilahStarling send a private message

Reconciliation is a United States congressional procedure designed to avoid filibuster in order to get a straight vote on legislation. History shows that Republicans have used the reconciliation procedure more than Democrats. Of the 22 reconciliation bills Congress has sent a president since the procedure was first used in 1980. ...
